Clapton's Les Paul Legacy: The Beano Burst Story
When Eric Clapton recorded with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in 1966, he created a sound that would change guitar history. His weapon of choice? A 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard that would become known as the legendary "Beano Burst"…
The Guitar That Launched a Revolution
Before this album, Les Pauls weren't particularly sought after. After Clapton plugged his into a Marshall amplifier, everything changed. That thick, singing sustain with creamy midrange and biting treble created what guitarists still call "the Clapton tone" - a sound that launched countless imitations.
What made it special was the perfect storm of elements: the Les Paul's mahogany body, maple cap, and humbucker pickups paired with the Marshall's tube saturation. It wasn't just blues anymore; it was blues reimagined with a voice that could whisper and scream.
A Rock Mystery: The Stolen Guitar
The story took a dramatic turn when the Beano Burst was stolen during Cream's first rehearsals in 1966. Despite significant rewards offered for its return, the guitar vanished completely, becoming rock's most famous missing instrument.
"I still think about that guitar," Clapton reflected in 2016. "It was special. I'd love to know where it is."
Beyond the Beano
After losing his famous Les Paul, Clapton mostly switched to Stratocasters. However, the impact of his brief Les Paul period was permanent. Virtually overnight, Gibson Les Pauls went from being considered somewhat outdated to being the most desirable guitars for serious rock and blues players.
Today, vintage Les Pauls command six-figure prices, and players everywhere are still chasing that elusive "Beano" tone - a perfect blend of Les Paul, Marshall amp, and the touch of a guitarist who knew how to make six strings speak with a human voice.
Though Clapton's original Les Paul may never resurface, its legacy is secure. In those few months before it disappeared, it helped create a template for rock guitar tone that musicians have been pursuing ever since.
