Hold Your Ukulele Like a Pro: Essential Posture Tips
Bad posture doesn't just look awkward - it can actually hold back your playing. Whether you're sitting or standing with your ukulele, getting comfortable makes everything easier. Let's sort out your setup…
Sitting Position
Your ukulele should feel like it's part of you, not fighting against you. Rest the body against your chest, with the neck angled slightly upward. Your strumming arm should rest naturally on the body - no awkward reaching or stretching.
Common Mistakes to Fix:

1

Holding the ukulele too low (hello, neck strain)

2

Squeezing too tight (your ukulele won't run away)

3

Hunching over to see the fretboard (bring the ukulele up, not your head down)

4

Tensing your shoulders (breathe and relax - ukulele is supposed to be fun!)
Standing Position
Playing standing up? Adjust your strap so the ukulele sits at roughly the same height as when you're sitting. The neck should be at about a 45-degree angle - not parallel to the ground, not pointing at the sky.
Quick Tips for Better Posture:

1

Keep your wrist straight on both hands

2

Let your fretting thumb rest behind the neck

3

Stand up straight (but not stiff)

4

Check yourself in a mirror occasionally

5

Take regular breaks to shake out any tension
Left-Handed? No Problem
Everything above still applies - just flip it around. Some lefties prefer to restring their uke, others learn right-handed. There's no wrong choice here - go with what feels natural.
Remember: good posture isn't about looking professional - it's about playing comfortably for longer. Sort out your position now, and your future self will thank you.
