Beyond Scales: Create Guitar Solos That People Remember
Running up and down scales might show off your practice hours, but it won't make people remember your solos. Let's dig into what actually works - creating solos that stick in people's heads long after you've finished playing.
Think about your favourite guitar solos. Chances are they're not just fast scales… they're melodies you can hum.
That's the secret: treating your solo like a melody, not an exercise.
Here's how to break free from scale-running:
  • Start by singing what you want to play. If you can't sing it, your listeners probably can't follow it
  • Leave space between phrases. Those gaps are as important as the notes
  • Use repetition. Find a simple short phrase that works and develop it
  • Listen to the vocal melody of the song. Try playing the melody first, then add your own twist
  • Focus on targeting chord tones, not just running through scales
  • Bend notes with purpose - they're great for expression and emotion, not just showing off
Try this exercise…
Play three notes. No more, you only get three. That's it. Make them count.
Now play those same three notes with different timing. Change the order. Bend one of them. You've just created several musical phrases from just three notes.
Want to level up?
Record a simple chord progression and try these approaches:
  • Play only whole notes (one note per bar)
  • Use just one string
  • Play the same phrase starting on different beats of the bar
  • Create "call and response" phrases, using high and low notes
Remember: your guitar solo is part of the song, not a competition. The goal is to add something meaningful, not just fill space with notes. Some of the most memorable solos in rock history use fewer notes than you'd think.
Next time you're soloing, slow down. Think melody. And remember - the notes you don't play are just as important as the ones you do.
