Guitar Tab vs Notation: Which Should You Learn?
When you're starting out, those little numbers on tab look a lot friendlier than the dots and lines of standard notation. Let's cut through the debate and look at what really matters for guitarists…
The Reality of Guitar Music
Here's the truth - if you're playing rock, pop, blues, jazz, or most modern styles, you'll mainly see:
  • Guitar tabs for riffs and solos
  • Lead sheets (showing chords and basic structure)
  • Charts combining tab and chords for complete songs
Standard notation for guitar is really only common in classical guitar pieces and some orchestral parts (though rare). Even in jazz, you're typically working from lead sheets showing the chord progressions.
What's Good About Tab
The best thing about tab is its simplicity - it shows you exactly which fret to play on which string. That's why:
  • You can start playing songs faster
  • It's perfect for guitar-specific techniques like bends and slides
  • You can find tabs for almost any song online
  • It's easy to read on your phone while practicing
Understanding Rhythm
You'll often see standard notation written above tab - this is actually really useful. While you might not need to read the notes, learning to read rhythms from standard notation helps you understand…
  • How long to hold each note
  • When to play each note
  • The overall timing of the piece
This combination of tab and notation gives you the best of both worlds… easy-to-read fret positions with clear timing.
Where Standard Notation Wins
Standard notation does have some advantages…
  • Shows you the rhythm precisely
  • Works for any instrument
  • Helps you understand how music fits together
  • Essential if you want to study classical guitar
What Should You Learn?
If you're just starting out…

1

Start with tab to get playing quickly

2

Learn to read lead sheets - you'll need these for most songs

3

Learn basic rhythm notation to improve your timing

4

Pick up full standard notation only if you want to play classical guitar
Don't let anyone tell you that using tab makes you less of a musician. The goal is making music, not how you read it.
